I am a Mexican- American! My mom is from the state of Jalisco and my dad is from El Estado de Mexico. / Soy mexicoamericana. Mi madre es del estado de Jalisco y mi padre es del estado de México.
- What is your major and classification? / ¿Cuál es tu especialización y clasificación?
I am a senior student majoring in Marketing. / Soy estudiante de último año y me especializo en mercadeo (marketing).
- Are you a first-generation college student? / ¿Eres el primer miembro de tu familia en asistir a la universidad?
Yes, I am a first-generation student and the very first to graduate with a Bachelors in my family. / Sí, soy el primer miembro de mi familia en asistir a la universidad y el primero en graduarse con una licenciatura.
- What challenges did you face to attend college? / ¿Qué desafíos enfrentaste para asistir a la universidad?
Being a first-generation student comes with an array of difficulties, and each person's experience will be different. I had imposter syndrome for the first two years of my college career, which was my main challenge. I often thought of myself as a "fraud," doubted my skills, and felt like I did not belong. I'm glad to say that I no longer think this, and I have faith in my ability, determination, and competence. / Ser el primer miembro de mi familia en asistir a la universidad conlleva diversos desafíos, y la experiencia de cada persona será diferente. Durante los dos primeros años de mi carrera universitaria, lidié con el síndrome del impostor, que fue mi principal desafío. A menudo me veía a mí mismo como un "fraude", dudaba de mis habilidades y sentía que no encajaba. Estoy contento de decir que ya no siento esto y tengo fe en mi capacidad, determinación y competencia.
- What advice would you give to aspiring Latino students on attending college? / ¿Qué consejo darías a los estudiantes latinos que aspiran a asistir a la universidad?
My biggest piece of advice for Latinos is to set clear goals and build a strong support system. I emphasize the importance of a strong support system because as first-generation students, we do not get the advantage of having it at home. I encourage people to seek help through mentorship programs, career counselors and older peers who can help navigate the college experience. / Mi consejo más importante para los latinos es establecer metas claras y construir un sólido sistema de apoyo. Destaco la importancia de un sólido sistema de apoyo porque, como estudiantes de primera generación, no tenemos la ventaja de contar con uno en casa. Animo a las personas a buscar ayuda a través de programas de mentoría, consejeros de carrera y compañeros mayores que puedan ayudar a navegar por la experiencia universitaria.
- What are your plans after graduation? / ¿Cuáles son tus planes después de graduarte?
After graduating with my marketing degree, I plan to gain practical experience by securing an entry level marketing position at a reputable company. I am seeking opportunities to develop my skills in areas like digital marketing, market research, and branding. Additionally, I aim to continue my education through online courses and certifications to stay updated with the latest marketing trends and strategies, working towards a leadership role in the field. / Después de graduarme con mi título en Marketing, planeo adquirir experiencia práctica al obtener un puesto de nivel inicial en una empresa de buena reputación. Estoy buscando oportunidades para desarrollar mis habilidades en áreas como marketing digital, investigación de mercado y branding. Además, tengo la intención de continuar mi educación a través de cursos en línea y certificaciones para mantenerme actualizado con las últimas tendencias y estrategias de marketing, trabajando hacia un puesto de liderazgo en el campo.
- What accomplishments are you most proud of during your time at Lamar? / ¿De qué logros te sientes más orgullosa durante tu tiempo en Lamar?
I can say with great pride and gratitude that Lamar University has provided me with many opportunities. Since starting in 2020, I have made the dean's list or the president's list every semester. I was also accepted into the selective Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society. Additionally, I completed a marketing internship this year with Lamar University's Center for Career and Professional Development. Last but not least, in the spring I was awarded the Carter scholarship, which made it attainable for me to travel to Greece this summer to study abroad. / Puedo decir con gran orgullo y gratitud que la Universidad de Lamar me ha brindado muchas oportunidades. Desde que comencé en 2020, he estado en la lista de decanos o en la lista del presidente cada semestre. También fui aceptado en la selecta Sociedad de Honor Omicron Delta Kappa. Además, completé una pasantía en marketing este año con el Centro de Carreras y Desarrollo Profesional de la Universidad de Lamar. Por último, pero no menos importante, en la primavera recibí la beca Carter, lo que me permitió viajar a Grecia este verano para estudiar en el extranjero.

I’m a psychology major with a minor in health. / Soy estudiante de psicología con una especialización secundaria en salud.

- What challenges did you face to attend college? / ¿Qué desafíos enfrentaste para asistir a la universidad?
A challenge I had to overcome was finding scholarships and understanding the financial side of college like Financial Aid. Another challenge would be becoming involved in college and building my resume by doing so. / Uno de los desafíos que tuve que superar fue encontrar becas y comprender el aspecto financiero de la universidad, como la ayuda financiera. Otro desafío fue involucrarme en la vida universitaria y construir mi CV.
- What are your plans after graduation? / ¿Cuáles son tus planes después de graduarte?
My plans after graduation are to attend graduate school to pursue mental health counseling and become a LPC (licensed practiced counselor). / Mis planes después de graduarme son asistir a la escuela de posgrado para estudiar consejería de salud mental y convertirme en un LPC (consejera con licencia en práctica).
- What accomplishments are you most proud of during your time at Lamar? / ¿De qué logros te sientes más orgullosa durante tu tiempo en Lamar?
I have done so much during my time at Lamar, but the proudest accomplishment is becoming a Lamar University Ambassador. Representing the Lamar student body is a great responsibility, and I was fortunate to have been picked. During my time as an ambassador, I have loved attending events with past alumni and donors and getting exposure to possible connections most students may not have. / He logrado mucho durante mi tiempo en Lamar, pero el logro del que más orgullosa me siento es convertirme en Embajadora de la Universidad Lamar. Representar al alumnado de Lamar es una gran responsabilidad y tuve la suerte de haber sido elegida. Durante mi tiempo como embajadora, he disfrutado asistir a eventos con alumnos y donantes. He tenido el privilegio de conocer a personas que la mayoría de los estudiantes quizás no hayan conocido.

- What challenges did you face to attend college? / ¿Qué desafíos enfrentaste para asistir a la universidad?
One of the main challenges I experienced was registering for college. It was unfamiliar territory, and I had no idea what I was doing. I decided to take a leap of faith and believe in myself. The process felt intimidating, and I felt like I did not belong. But I pushed past those negative thoughts, and I have been resilient every step of the way. / Uno de los principales desafíos que tuve fue el proceso de registrarme en la universidad. Era un territorio desconocido y no tenía idea de lo que estaba haciendo. Decidí dar un salto de fe y creer en mí misma. El proceso me parecía intimidante, y no sentía que pertenecía. Pero superé esos pensamientos negativos y he sido resiliente en cada paso del camino.
- What advice would you give to aspiring Latino students on attending college? / ¿Qué consejo darías a los estudiantes latinos que aspiran a asistir a la universidad?
The advice I would give to Latinos is to be focused. Whatever goals and dreams you have, be sure to stay disciplined and to keep striving for those dreams. Also, it is never too late to change your life for the better. Whether that be pursuing college, changing careers or starting a business, take that leap of faith and go for it! / El consejo que daría a los latinos es que se mantengan enfocados. Sea cual sea el objetivo o los sueños que tengan, asegúrense de mantener la disciplina y seguir luchando por esos sueños. Además, nunca es demasiado tarde para cambiar tu vida, ya sea asistir a la universidad, cambiar de carrera o comenzar un negocio. ¡Da ese salto de fe y ve por ello!
- What are your plans after graduation? / ¿Cuáles son tus planes después de graduarte?
My plans are to pursue my master's in business. I own a marketing company; TR Media, and I plan to grow my small business and give back to my community. I am passionate about education and the Hispanic community. My heart is set on helping the next generation of Hispanics pursuing college but lack the resources and/or knowledge to attend college. / Mis planes son cursar una maestría en negocios. Soy dueña de una empresa de marketing, TR Media, y pienso crecer mi pequeño negocio y contribuir a mi comunidad. Me apasiona la educación y la comunidad hispana. Mi objetivo es ayudar a la próxima generación de hispanos que desean asistir a la universidad pero les hace falta el recurso o conocimiento para hacerlo.
- What accomplishments are you most proud of during your time at Lamar? / ¿De qué logros te sientes más orgullosa durante tu tiempo en Lamar?
Storytelling is one of my many passions, and I am proud to say that I wrote the first article in Spanish at the University Press and conducted the first Spanish interview for LUTV during my freshmen year. I have made the dean’s list, received leadership recognition and I have been awarded the “Inspirational Woman” student award during Women’s History Month. I am proud to be chosen as a Mcnair Scholar. The Mcnair program aims to help first generation students pursue a doctoral degree. / La narración es una de mis pasiones, y estoy orgullosa de decir que escribí el primer artículo en español en el University Press y realicé la primera entrevista en español para LUTV durante mi primer año. He estado en la lista de decanos, he recibido reconocimiento de liderazgo y recibí el premio de "Mujer Inspiradora" durante el Mes de la Historia de la Mujer. Estoy orgullosa de haber sido elegida como becaria de McNair. El programa de McNair tiene como objetivo ayudar a estudiantes de primera generación a perseguir un doctorado.
