Lamar University is home to 15,000 students with many pursuing degrees in Fine Arts & Communications. Each year, these students showcase their talent through art, music and dance with multiple events throughout the year. From art exhibitions and music concerts to performing arts and dance performances, there is plenty coming up over the next couple of months.

Get Out the Vote Poster Show

Lamar University Department of Art students created designs for this show as part of Design for Democracy, an American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) initiative to increase civic participation through design. Poster designs are scaled at 11 x 17 inches to suit consumer printers as AIGA Get Out the Vote posters are available for download, printing, and distribution by anyone interested in supporting this mission. The LU Department of Theatre & Dance presents Boeing Boeing by Marc Camoletti, translated and adapted by Beverly Cross, winner of the 2008 Tony Award for best revival of a play. In this 1960's French farce adapted for the English-speaking stage, self-styled Parisian lothario Bernard, has Italian, German and American fiancées, each a beautiful airline hostess with frequent "layovers." He keeps "one up, one down and one pending," until unexpected schedule changes bring all three to Paris and Bernard's apartment at the same time. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. on November 3-5 and 2:00 p.m. on November 6. Tickets may be purchased over the phone at (409) 880-2250 or an hour before each performance.

Lamar University's Opera Theatre presents An Evening with Puccini and the Verismo at 7:30 p.m. in the Rothwell Recital Hall. Originating from the Italian word verità (meaning truth), verismo is a post-Romantic style and tradition in Italian opera. All scenes and arias are performed in Italian with projected supertitles of synopses and other information. The performance features selections from Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, Le Villi, Edgar, Gianni Schicchi, Suor Angelica, La Bohème, and much more. Please call (409) 880-8144 for reservations or more information.

Pianist Jason Kwak has already enjoyed a successful career, both as an artist and as a pedagogue. Born in Seoul, South Korea, Dr. Kwak began his piano studies at the age of four. The Mary Morgan Moore Department of Music at Lamar University will present a recital with Dr. Jason Kwak, professor of piano at Texas State University, at 7:30 p.m. in the Rothwell Recital Hall. Trombone Choir & Brass Ensembles Concert

The Lamar University Trombone Choir will be joined by the Lamar Honors Brass Quintet, Euphonium Ensemble and various brass chamber music groups as part of the “Soul of the City Concert Series.” The concert will feature beautiful classical and romantic music, fun energetic movie music and a few surprises. The Lamar University brass ensembles return to St Anthony Cathedral Basilica at 7:30 p.m. with soul stirring arrangements of the Ave Maria, Bruckner chorales, and even a few selections with a pirate theme.

Lamar University's Department of Theatre and Dance will present its fall dance concert, Fall & Recovery, celebrating dance in all its diverse forms. The family friendly concert will feature ballet, modern, tap and contemporary dance styles. The evening will showcase distinctive original works choreographed by LU faculty, guest artists and students. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, November 18 and Saturday, November 19, and 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 20. The University Theatre is located at 4400 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway on the LU campus.

Lamar University’s A Cappella Choir and Grand Chorus will perform sacred choral world-music by 21st century composers including Ēriks Ešenvalds of Latvia; Ola Gjeilo, Norway; Morten Lauridsen, Unites States; Ko Matsushita, Japan; and Eric Whitacre, United States. The concert is presented by the Mary Morgan Moore Department of Music and takes place at St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica in downtown Beaumont at 5:30 p.m.

Lamar University’s acclaimed Wind Ensemble and Concert Band gets you ready for the holiday season with selections from the “Polar Express” and much more on Thursday, December 1 at 7:30 p.m. The concert will include “Morning Alleluias for the Winter Solstice,” by Ron Nelson; the “Sussex Mummers' Christmas Carol,” by Percy Grainger; and “Russian Christmas Music,” by Alfred Reed, among other selections. Dr. Scott Deppe, director of bands at LU conducts the Wind Ensemble, while Dr. Eric Shannon, director of athletic bands, conducts the Concert Band.

From Where We Stand: Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Thesis Exhibition

Lamar University art students will fulfill the requirements for their degree by presenting their thesis projects, ranging from graphic design and painting to ceramics and sculpture. These projects will be on display in the Dishman Art Museum December 2 -18. An opening reception will be held on Friday, December 2 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. The museum is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Free museum-dedicated parking is available in front of the Dishman during museum hours.
