It’s not very often that you get the chance to go back in time and enjoy something unique from long ago. At Classic Movie Nights at the Jefferson Theatre you can! The complete movie experience is a blast from the past for people in our area and it’s so popular there are now more chances for you to go. The historic theatre is back in business and booming with activity!
“People enjoy the experience of seeing the movie in a theatre that was built in 1927 because it’s not like any other place you will see a movie,” said Emily Wheeler. “The Jefferson truly is a movie house.”
When the City of Beaumont made a commitment to managing the theatre, Wheeler says it made sense to bring it back to its original purpose of showing films.
“It started as an opportunity to really showcase the building. We have this beautiful theatre in pristine condition; it’s just a wonderful resource that our community has,” said Wheeler. “You feel like it’s the same way it was when it was built. That’s such a testament to the City’s commitment to keep it looking great.”
In August of 2014 the City of Beaumont kicked off Classic Movie Nights by showing the movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. The plan was to show a movie once a month but it was so popular more shows were quickly added. You aren’t just grabbing a seat and watching a movie. It’s a full experience.
“You walk in and there is live music in the lobby, craft beer, inexpensive concessions and popcorn,” said Wheeler. “We even hired an animator who created cartoons that are specific for the Jefferson that show on the big screen.”
“I love going because the place is so beautiful inside,” said Nicki LaRocca. “The Jefferson seems much cleaner than the regular theater spots. Everyone gets into the movie. I’ll be going to see Rocky Horror for the third time this month!”
“People really get into it. When we showed the Blues Brothers we had ladies dressed up as characters,” said Wheeler. “For Pretty Woman we had people who wore derby hats and dresses and for an Elvis film there were a few people who showed up as Elvis!”
“We love going as a family and quoting the movie as it plays! Everyone else does it so it’s so much fun,” said Jerri Snyder.
“It offers an inexpensive option for mother-daughter date night, and ultimately, it made my daughter a Princess Bride aficionado,” said Felicia Jerdee.
Wheeler says many people who come say they are bringing their family so they can create memories for their kids.
“So many generations won’t ever get to experience seeing a film in a theatre like that and we are now making the opportunity available,” said Wheeler. “Grandparents and parents who saw movies there when they are young love bringing their family to show them what it was like. It helps people feel like they are connected to history.”
“Think of us on a Friday night when they are looking for something fun to do,” said Wheeler. “There is just something about going to the Jefferson Theatre, sitting down and watching a movie that you just don’t forget.”
Classic Movie Nights costs $6.00 per person with beer, wine, and other concessions available for purchase.
