Lamar Football history
Lamar University, home of the Lamar Cardinals, has a long history with football. After a twenty year hiatus, the football team is back in action for the 2010 season with a new stadium, a great coach and motivated players.

The football program started in 1923 when the University was called South Park Junior College. During the inuagural season, South Park played high schools and senior colleges and ended the season 2-4-1. After the 1926 season, home crowds dwindled and the program was discontinued for 5 years. When the school name was changed to Lamar College in 1932, the football program returned. The program started the thrive and continued until 1942. Because of the war, Lamar only had 23 players during the 1942 season. The football program was discontinued for the remainder of the war years, '43-'45. The Cardinals returned to the football field in 1946, finishing the season with an 8-2 record.
The football program continued on through wins and loses, great players and great coaches and from Junior College status to major college status to Lamar University. After the 1986-87 season Lamar withdrew from Southland Conference and joined the newly created American South Conference, which did not sponsor football. The team had to play as an Division I-AA independent, which made scheduling difficult. The program was discounted again after the 1989 season.
