Held quarterly at the Art Museum of Southeast Texas, Free Family Arts Days take place on a Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Admission is always free and kid-friendly events relate to current exhibits at the museum. During the program, kids are able to have hands-on interaction with a variety of art mediums and encouraged to let their creativity thrive. Refreshments and entertainment are also provided. 2016 Free Family Arts Days:

February 20: Fun in the Mud!

In conjunction with the Linnis Blanton ceramics exhibit, kids will be encouraged to make their own clay vessels by experimenting with various techniques such as coils, slabs, textured stamps and pinch pots. There will also be demonstrations in wheel throwing and firing for "Fun in the Mud!" Winter Family Arts Day.

May 21: Migrate to AMSET

Don't miss Spring Family Arts Day! Planned with the exhibit, Birds in Art, kids will make bird masks, draw living birds and create feather art. They'll also have the opportunity to make edible birds’ nests, decorate eggs and listen to a short talk about backyard birding.

August 20: Folk Art

To celebrate Folk Art from the Permanent Collection, kids who participate in Summer Family Arts Day will have the chance to work with a range of media, including recycled materials, sequins, glitter, paint, and other common found items.

October 29: Eat a Bug!

Children and their families are given a chance to try the creepy, crawly delicacy of fried crickets at "Eat a Bug!" Fall Family Arts Day. Hands-on art activities allow kids to learn about the current exhibit as well as the many cultures of our region. Day of the Dead and Latin American crafts such as decorated sugar skulls, cut paper designs and piñatas along with Latin American music and dancing can be expected. Children are encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes.
