One of the best things about Beaumont and southeast Texas is the abundance of artistic talent found throughout the area. Perhaps it's because we start cultivating artists at a young age with programs like Free Family Arts Days at the Art Museum of Southeast Texas. Held quarterly, Free Family Arts Days take place on a Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Admission is always free and kid-friendly events relate to current exhibits at the museum. During the program, kids are able to have hands-on interaction with a variety of art mediums and encouraged to let their creativity thrive. Refreshments and entertainment are also provided. Have a budding artist on your hands? The 2016 schedule for Free Family Arts Days is below. Mark your calendars & plan to bring the family!
Saturday, February 20: Winter Family Arts Day, Fun in the Mud!
Winter Family Arts Day is be about fun in the mud – clay mud, that is! In conjunction with the Linnis Blanton ceramics exhibit, the Art Museum of Southeast Texas will be creating various types of sculpture with clay. There will be demonstrations in wheel throwing and firing. Visitors will be encouraged to make their own clay vessels by experimenting with various techniques such as coils, slabs, textured stamps and pinch pots.

For Summer Family Arts Day, visitors will explore a range of media including recycled materials to emulate the work in the concurrent exhibition Folk Art from the Permanent Collection. Other fun includes kid-friendly materials such as sequins, glitter, paint, and other common found items to give everyone the opportunity to create wonderful works of art with nontraditional materials. Face painting and refreshments round out this wonderful event.
Saturday, October 29: Fall Family Arts Day, "Eat a Bug!"
“Eat a Bug!” Family Arts Day is one of AMSET’s most popular events, where children and their families are tempted to try the creepy, crawly delicacy of fried crickets. Hands-on art activities focus on the many cultures of our region and the main gallery exhibition. Visitors will learn about the current exhibit on view through hands-on art activities as well as Day of the Dead and Latin American crafts such as decorated sugar skulls, cut paper designs and piñatas. Entertainment includes Latin American music and dancing. Children are encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes.
