The Gusher Marathon is not just about getting people together for one race day in Beaumont. It’s about making a difference in the lives of as many people as possible, one mile at a time. That’s the goal of the Gusher Marathon founders Amie and Richard James.

The Gusher Marathon was founded in 2010 and has grown tremendously over the years. This year race day is Saturday, February 27th and organizers expect 2,000 to 2,500 people to participate in various events held that day. People will be traveling from as far as Abu Dhabi, France, Great Britain, Mexico, Alaska and Canada. There are also a lot of runners signed up from all over Texas, Louisiana and other states. So, why come to Beaumont?

“It is centrally located within a five hour drive from many major cities and Beaumont has enough hotels, restaurants, and attractions to accommodate and to entertain visitors,” said James, “The winter weather (compared to more northern locations) is much kinder to being outdoors. I believe our course is fun with showcasing Lamar University and downtown.”

It’s also a relatively flat and fast course which gives people an opportunity to set new personal records. The Gusher is USA Track and Field certified course and a Boston qualifier, which is a big deal in the running community.

James also says the kindness of people in the Beaumont community has helped make the Gusher a hit. There are hundreds of volunteers to help make the day possible by doing everything from manning water stations to helping direct runners along the route.

“Our focus is the runner's experience,” said James, “We try to provide more water stations, better stocked stations, and attend to the runner's needs as much as possible. Our sponsors and volunteers are top notch.”

The marathon starts and ends at the Montagne Center, winding through the Lamar University campus and downtown Beaumont. There is also a half marathon, 5k, kids club and cycling time trial on the same day. James hopes everyone will take part in some way.

“We want the entire community to be able to participate and to see the numerous ways they can be healthy and active.  That is why we have the ExxonMobil Heads or Tails Cycling Time Trial, the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Beaumont Kids Marathon Club, and now the Roughneck.  We have not seen another marathon with these other events,” said James.

For runners, sometimes the thing that gets them through a race is something simple like someone holding a funny sign or a group of people cheering them on. James says spectators really encourage and motivate runners. If you are not running or volunteering, consider cheering!

“Bring signs, bring music, or dance…the options are only limited by your imagination,” said James, “If you play an instrument or sing, what better way to play before hundreds and thousands of individuals. A moving audience!”

After the race there is a huge party complete with vendors, bands, kids activities and plenty of food. Race day turns into a big party celebrating health, Beaumont, friends and family.

“It is something they can do with family and friends and there is no way to explain the uplifting and motivating atmosphere of such an event,” said James.

Registration for the races closes on February 26th. The MCM Eleganté Hotel is the official race sponsor, with discounts for race participants. As always, we have a complete list of hotels, restaurants and other things to do when you are here.
