Check out a Museum

Did you know Beaumont is home to many historical sites and museums? If the rain is keeping you indoors, head out and check out a few!

The Clifton Steamboat Museum honors our military and civilian heroes. The museum’s art galleries bring to life the Wars fought in Southeast Texas and Louisiana, as well as the Steamboat era, World War I, World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. A special gallery in the museum is dedicated to the Boy Scouts with artifacts dating back before the 1960's. The museum also has a gift shop.

You’ve probably seen the giant fire hydrant outside the Fire Museum of Texas. This tribute to firefighters houses a collection of antique engines and firefighting equipment dating back to the 1800s. Take your picture in front of the original World’s Largest Fire Hydrant! Activities for children include the chance to dress up in a firefighter uniforms and drive the fire engine simulator.

The John Jay French House Museum, built in 1845, is one of the oldest surviving houses in Beaumont. The historic pioneer settlement, built by John Jay French, tanner and merchant, is filled with antique furnishings, clothing and pioneer household utensils. Outbuildings on the grounds include a blacksmith shop, tannery, privy and smokehouse.

Relax in the Library

The Tyrrell Historical Library in Downtown Beaumont is one of the most beautiful buildings in our city and it also happens to be a really cool library! Capt. W. C. Tyrrell purchased the First Baptist Church in 1923 and donated the building for library purposes to the city of Beaumont. The church was built in 1903 in a modified Gothic style of architecture with rough gray stone and beautiful stained-glass windows. It is the main genealogical library in Southeast Texas and the archives focus on this region. Another family library favorite: The R C Miller Library at 1605 Dowlen Road. Check here for a complete list of library events.
